Ireland now has the third lowest rate of road fatalities in the European Union.

Figures from Eurostat show there were 31 deaths per million population here in 2018, totalling 149.

Road deaths in Ireland peaked in 1972 when 640, or just over 12 per week, were killed on Irish roads.

Grace Bolton of the European Commission office in Ireland says the figures here are continuing to improve.
