More Irish students are undertaking Erasmus exchange programmes than ever before.

New figures show that 3,472 students from Ireland spent the 2016/2017 academic year studying in and enjoying the sights of other EU States.

The Erasmus programme allows students from one EU State to study in another with participants receiving small financial grants.

Tim Hayes of the European Commission office in Dublin says France has proved to be the most popular destination for Irish students.
