The European Parliament and EU Commission have reached agreement to impose new measures to stop ruthless retailers from engaging in unfair trading practices.

The conduct, whereby some supermarkets force suppliers to reduce their prices below break-even point, has resulted in thousands of food and product suppliers across the EU going out of business.

The new measures, which will impose penalties on major retailers who engage in unfair practice, could be law here by the end of 2019.

Gerry Kiely of the EU Commission office in Ireland says the agreement is good news for suppliers and will help to maintain job security and prosperity in several sectors.
