Irish awareness of the use of antibiotics has fallen from 57 per cent to 46 per cent.

Figures from Eurobar also show that Ireland, on 40 per cent, had the fourth highest use of antibiotics last year after Italy at 47%, and Malta and Spain, both at 42%.

Jonathan Claridge of the EU Commission office in Dublin says Irish use of antibiotics is way above the EU average and a growing number of people are unaware of when they should be used.
