Almost five out of every ten batteries purchased in Ireland are now re-cycled.

New figures for 2016 from Eurostat show that only 15 Member States reached the 45% target set by the EU Batteries Directive for the collection rate of portable batteries.

The report reveals that five countries did not report a battery-collection rate at all.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Ireland says in the overall findings, Ireland is one of the better performers for battery recycling.
