A new regime of transparency for banks and financial services providers across the EU comes into effect from today (Wednesday).

Under new EU rules, banks will have to better inform their customers about the fees associated with opening and maintaining bank accounts.

The European Commission says the new measures will make it easier to shop around for the best and cheapest offers from banks.

The cost of using debit cards will become more transparent, according to Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Ireland.
