Almost 13,000 items were detained by Irish customs agents during 2017, according to new figures released by the European Commission.

31 million fake and counterfeit goods worth over €580 million were seized by customs officials across the European Union last year.

65 per cent of items detained were transported by sea vessels.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Dublin says food items were top of the smuggling list.
