Ireland's share of electricity generated from renewable sources has risen to almost 30 per cent.

This marks a three-fold increase on the 2006 figure when it stood at just 8.7 per cent.

The Eurostat figures for 2016 show that Austria tops the league table with 73.1 per cent of its electricity coming from renewable sources.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Dublin says the figure shows that Ireland's use of renewable sources for generating electricity is improving with each passing year.
