Hopes are high that Ireland will win the European Young Scientist's Contest for the 15th time. The competition takes place at the RDS in Dublin from today (Friday) until next Wednesday.

139 students from 38 countries will compete for a 1st prize of €7,000 and 90 exhibits will be on display.

Ireland is represented by Simon Meehan, a student at Coláiste Choilm in Cork.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission says Ireland's great success in the 28-year history of the competition, is completely disproportionate to Ireland's size and the number of Irish students participating.
