Ireland's beaches continue to lag behind the rest of Europe when it comes to bathing water quality.

The EU average stands at 85 per cent while Irish bathing water ranks at just 71.8 per cent.

The survey by the European Environment Agency found that of 142 beaches examined here, 102 were excellent while seven were classed as poor.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission in Ireland says the majority of the poor bathing water beaches are in County Dublin.
