Moves are underway to make Wi-Fi free in public spaces across the European Union.

From today, local authorities are being invited to submit applications for vouchers to cover the cost of installing public Wi-Fi.

City and County Councils within Ireland can claim up to 15 vouchers on a first come-first serve basis.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Dublin says the free Wi-Fi hotspots could be set up in many different public places.
