The European Commission has recommended making social protection available to all employees across the European Union, including the self-employed and people on short-term contracts.

The proposal has arisen from the Commission’s concern that limited social protection is available to these types of workers. If agreed by the European Parliament and the Member States, it could take several years to implement.

Grace Bolton of the European Commission office in Dublin says that the proposal aims to guarantee social welfare protection for all workers in times of economic uncertainty.
