The European Commission has praised Ireland for its social protection system.

In its recent European Semester - or Annual Country Report - it says that Ireland's social protection programme does relatively well in reducing poverty and promoting inclusion.

The report says progress is being made in delivering social housing but warns that rising homelessness remains a problem.

Grace Bolton of the EU Commission office in Dublin says great progress is being made in a number of key social areas.
